We addressed the issue of deepfakes in one of our previous publications, and we wish to return to this important subject.
These sophisticated digital manipulations have the power to create falsified videos and images of such reality that they can deceive even the most sophisticated observers, thus raising major ethical concerns and calling into question the veracity of what we see online.
Deepfakes, produced with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), make it possible to substitute the face or voice of a person with those of another. Initially designed for humorous or entertainment purposes, these technologies have rapidly evolved into potentially dangerous instruments, used for manipulation, disinformation, and even blackmail.
It is essential to understand that deepfakes have the power to sow confusion in several fields, may they be political, social, or economic. Consider a falsified political speech attributed to a world leader, likely to provoke geopolitical tensions, or a compromising video involving a public figure, designed to tarnish their reputation and jeopardize their career. And no need to be a known personality to become a victim.
Faced with these growing challenges, it is imperative to develop detection tools as well as effective measures to counter the proliferation of deepfakes.
Recently, while attending the InCyber Europe Forum in Lille, we witnessed a fascinating demonstration of Deepfake Mirror at the Docaposte stand. We discovered a tool capable of altering our face with that of another person, in real-time, highlighting the growing sophistication of image manipulation technologies and underscoring the urgency of finding solutions to counter this threat.
With Veintree, we offer a promising solution to the fight against deepfakes. Our innovative technology generates virtual locks and digital authentication keys by converting the venous pattern of the hand into an encrypted sequence. This makes it possible to reliably authenticate an individual, through a method that robots and avatars cannot imitate.
To further enhance document security and integrity, Veintree can exploit the immutable nature of blockchains: by stamping the original document on a blockchain, its authenticity and origin become unalterable, thereby offering a double layer of security.
Deepfakes represent a major challenge for our constantly evolving society. By recognizing their potential for manipulation and acting proactively to mitigate their harmful effects, we can hope to successfully navigate through the challenges posed by this complex digital age.
